Lucy Gray (Maness) Matthews

Lucy Maness Matthews, age 89, of Whispering Pines, went to her heavenly home on Saturday, May 1, 2021, with her family by her side.

A Graveside Service will be held on Thursday, May 6, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at Yates Thagard Baptist Church Cemetery with Pastor Steve Johnson officiating. A visitation will be held on Thursday, May 6, at Cox Memorial Funeral Home Chapel from 12:00 until 1:30.

Lucy was born in Robbins, North Carolina on January 26, 1932 to the late Theodore and Flossie Maness. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her husband, Darrell Matthews, sisters, Helen Hussy and Annie Maness, brothers, Ed Maness and Sonny Maness.

She graduated Elise High School in 1951 and was voted "most studious".  She worked at Robbins Mill after high school and within 4 years time, bought her first car, a 1955 Ford convertible.

Lucy's achievements in life were numerous but she will be remembered as a woman of God who loved to read the Bible and would offer quotes to friends and family in times of need. She was a hard worker on the family farm and also loved working in the yard with her flowers.

She loved collecting things, especially dolls and making them too. She was an exceptional seamstress and often made clothes and quilts for her family and friends.

Every season was special to her but Christmas was by far her favorite time of year. She loved decorating and bringing all of the family together.

She was such a beautiful lady inside and out and the most loving, unselfish, giving person that God has created. She was truly loved by all.

Lucy is survived by her children, Tony Matthews (Linda), Wanda M. Ring (Mike), and Mark Matthews, all of Carthage, Belinda M. Riley (Landy) of Whispering Pines, Brent Matthews (Tammy) of High Falls; thirteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
