Mary Jane (Keough) Zagari

Mary K. Zagari, age 86, of Vass, passed away on Wednesday, April 10, 2025, at home surrounded by her family.

Mary was born in Wayland, NY on Dec 7, 1938, to the late Quinn Francis and Harriet Helena (Pritting) Keough.  She is survived by her daughters, Kathleen Powers (Thomas) of Vass, NC, Julianne McCarl (Mark) of Rockledge, FL, and Carolyn DeJesus (Daniel) of Vass, NC; grandchildren, Gregory Powers (Jesica), Christina Harwell (Joseph), Timothy Powers (Rebekah), Daniel DeJesus (Amber), James McCarl (Robyn), Margaret Miller (John), Michael DeJesus and Olivia DeJesus and twelve great-grandchildren.  She is also survived by cousins Jack Pritting, Nancy Hunter and Mary Stadelmaier, and special friends Elgie Brand and Gloria TeeBoon. She was predeceased by former husband James Brand.  

Mary taught in Rochester, NY area schools for over 40 years, specializing in remedial reading.  She is remembered by those who loved her as a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, who had a strong faith in Jesus Christ.  She loved reading, word and jigsaw puzzles, and all of the family pets.  She will be deeply missed. 

Heartfelt thanks from Mary's entire family for the special love and care provided by Liberty Hospice during Mary's illness.  

Family and friends will gather on April 11, 2025, at Cox Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, 4888 US Highway 1, Vass, NC for a viewing from 6-8 pm. 

A Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 160 East Vermont Ave., Southern Pines, NC at 9:00am.
