Ruth Frye Obituary

Ruth Ann Chilton Frye, 83, of Vass, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on May 3, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family after a courageous journey through dementia.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at Cox Memorial Funeral Home Chapel from 6 until 8.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, at 4:00pm at Vass First Baptist Church with Rev. Larry Vacek officiating. Burial will follow at Johnson Grove Cemetery.

Born on April 11, 1943, in Reidsville, North Carolina, Ruth Ann was the daughter of the late Charlie Andrew Chilton, Sr. and Annie Sue Wilson Chilton. Though born in Rockingham County, she was raised in neighboring Caswell County, where she grew up surrounded by faith, family, hard work, and the simple joys of country life. Her father was a successful tobacco farmer, and her mother lovingly cared for both their home and the small family country store that served their community for many years.

A proud graduate of Reidsville High School, Class of 1961, Ruth Ann went on to attend Elon College, where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Education in 1965. Shortly afterward, she and two of her closest friends accepted teaching positions in Moore County and moved to Vass, a place that would forever become home.

The three young teachers rented a garage apartment behind the home of Frederick and Aileen Taylor, and it was there that Ruth Ann’s life changed forever. Through mutual friends, she met Joseph Franklin Frye, the man who would become her husband and the love of her life. Family members fondly recall Joe telling his brother after seeing Ruth Ann at the bank where she worked during summers, “I’m going to marry that girl.” Six short weeks after their first date, he proposed, and they were married on June 18, 1967, beginning a devoted partnership that would span nearly 56 years until Joe’s passing in 2023.

Ruth Ann dedicated 32 years to Moore County Schools, spending the majority of her career teaching fourth grade at Vass-Lakeview Elementary School. Long before “differentiation” became a part of educational vocabulary, she instinctively understood that every child learned differently. She was known as a teacher with high expectations, firm discipline, and a deeply caring heart. Generations of students proudly knew her simply as “Mrs. Frye,” and many remained connected to her long after leaving her classroom. In a town as small and close-knit as Vass, Ruth Ann not only taught children, she eventually taught the children of former students as well.

While teaching and raising a family, Ruth Ann continued her own education, earning her master’s degree in education from Campbell University. Education was not simply her profession; it was part of who she was.

Ruth Ann was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Vass for many decades. She was deeply involved in church life through WMU, Vacation Bible School, Mission Friends, choir, revivals, church socials, and countless acts of quiet service that often went unseen but never unnoticed.

To know Ruth Ann was to know Southern hospitality at its finest. Her home was always warm, welcoming, and filled with the smells of home-cooked meals, laughter, and love. Summers were spent tending a garden beside her husband and preserving its harvest through canning and freezing vegetables for family gatherings yet to come. Ruth Ann was known for carefully selecting the “pretty ears” of corn to freeze on the cob, while the rest would be cut from the cob and preserved for later meals around her table.

Though she was known for her grace and proper Southern manners, Ruth Ann also possessed a wonderful sense of humor and a bit of sass that those closest to her adored. She was strong in moments when others fell apart, yet gentle enough to see the hurt in others and respond with compassion.

Above all else, Ruth Ann treasured her family. She was a devoted wife who stood faithfully beside her husband through every chapter of life, supporting his construction business, softball team, years of public service, and eventually his role as Mayor of Vass. Together they lovingly restored the home where they raised their daughter and created a lifetime of memories.

She was a loving mother to her daughter, Susan, instilling in her the values of hard work, kindness, independence, faith, hospitality, and compassion for others. Later in life, nothing brought Ruth Ann greater joy than becoming “Grammy” to Lauren Brooks Stroder. From the moment she heard Lauren’s first cry in the delivery room, Ruth Ann was completely in love. When Lauren was born, Ruth Ann faithfully cared for her each day while Susan worked, coming across the street each morning to help raise the granddaughter she adored so deeply.

Ruth Ann was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joseph Franklin Frye; her parents, Charlie Andrew Chilton, Sr. and Annie Sue Wilson Chilton; and infant daughter, Sarah Jo Frye.

She is survived by her daughter, Susan Frye Stroder; granddaughter, Lauren Brooks Stroder; brother, Charlie Andrew “Andy” Chilton, Jr. and wife Mary Ellen Taylor Chilton; nephew Charlie Andrew Chilton III and wife Leslie, along with their daughters; niece Allison Chilton Ewald and husband Tyler Ewald, along with their sons and daughter; and countless former students, church friends, neighbors, and loved ones whose lives were forever shaped by her kindness, strength, and unwavering love.

Though dementia slowly took many of her memories, it never erased the legacy she built through a life of service, faith, family, and love. Her influence lives on in every student she taught, every meal shared around her table, every hymn sung beside her in church, and in the family she loved so fiercely.
